Environment minister yoshiaki harada told a news conference at the ministry of environment Wednesday that a new law will ban free plastic bags from supermarkets, convenience stores, cosmeceuticals and department stores to curb the production of plastic waste that causes serious Marine pollution, Japanese media reported Wednesday.

The price of the bags will be set by businesses and trade groups to make them "effective" in reducing environmental burdens. Currently, each plastic bag costs between ¥10 (0.6 yuan).

"Plastic bags do not make up a large proportion of plastic waste, but the fees will become a symbol [of the move]," Mr Harada stressed. He added that "action must be taken to make it no later than the Tokyo Olympics" and expressed his intention to be ready by next summer at the latest.

Revenue from the sale of plastic bags will be required for environmental countermeasures such as regional greening campaigns and publicity campaigns related to the problem of Marine plastic waste. Discuss how to deal with plastic bags made from alternative materials that decompose easily in the environment.

Future systems will be designed in the same way toyama prefecture did in 2008. Supermarkets and laundromats are involved, with plastic bags costing 5 yen each and laundromats costing 10 yen each. The proceeds are used for local environmental activities.

The charge for plastic bags was included in a draft strategy for recycling plastic resources put together by the environment ministry last year, after discussions on specific methods.
